ABSTRACT One should keep his body in complete health since the same is very essential to lead a happy life. Ayurveda explains about Sarira(body) “ Saraha pranaha asmin Iiranthe ithi sariram” and explains the co-relation between body and mind ie.. Ayurveda and Astrology. Further it is accepted that, the influence of the planets are detrimental on one’s health , longevity as well as suffering. Quoting the following verse from Ayurvedic litrature :- “ Graheshu Anuguneshu Doshamargo Nava Sukhaha Graheshu Prthikooleshu na anukoolam hi bheshajam The bheshajaanaam veeryaani harnthi balavanthapi”.

Introduction According to Arya Vaidyan Sri P V Ramavarier, founder of The Arya Vaidya Pharmacy (Cbe) Limited, one should keep his body in complete health since the same is very essential to lead a happy life. He further quotes while explaining about Sarira(body) “ Saraha pranaha asmin Iiranthe ithi sariram” and explains the co-relation between body and mind ie.. Ayurveda and Astrology. Further he accepts that, the influence of the planets are detrimental on one’s health , longevity as well as suffering. Quoting the following verse from Ayurvedic litrature :- “ Graheshu Anuguneshu Doshamargo Nava Sukhaha Graheshu Prthikooleshu na anukoolam hi bheshajam The bheshajaanaam veeryaani harnthi balavanthapi” He instructs the doctors(Vaidyas) to pursue a brief study of horoscope of the patient or at least confirm the astrological timing before initiating Treatment.Planetary combinations for becoming a doctor He explains that, the Nakshatra Bandha (star relation) of the doctor and patient also playing a major role in the positive end result of treatment. So, it is found necessary to inform the medical practitioners who believe in the existence of Astrology and also who want to follow the instructions of Astrology regarding medical treatment. The influence of the planets on human diseases appears in the writings of the ancients and hence it is impossible and unwise to ignore their testimony in any orderly survey of the subject. While it is doubtlessly true that some of these references rest upon a basis of common superstition; it is impossible to deny that many others appear to be founded upon careful observation and recorded experience. The Tithi(Lunar day or Solar day) and Nakshatra(Star), which are important in Muhurtha, are based on the sun-moon movements. In the realm of astrology, the Moon is the sensorial, transmitter and collector of other planetary influences. In fact, seasonal changes, climate, electrical storms and our emotional behaviour are obviously correlated with the phases of the Sun and the Moon. Crises in acute diseases are marked by the transiting Moon which is the minute hand on the clock of destiny. The most serious crisis day in acute diseases is on the 14th day when the Moon is in opposition to his place when the disease started When the Moon occupies certain positions, he disturbs the equilibrium of the patient’s vitality so much so that medicine administered on such days would not prove efficacious. Hence the need for electing a proper time for undertaking medical and surgical treatments.

Importance of Muhurta Astrology is the science of time. That is why it is otherwise known as Hora Sastra. Muhurta also is a specific time, period namely 2 ghatis [48 minutes] . Modern medical science now clearly indicate that at different times the body functions are different in every respect. For us the main planet deciding time is Sun. (‘Kalatma dinakrit…’ by Varahamihira). Moon also has a subsidiary role. How does Sun influence the body function is now known to the medical world.

Before we go into this subject proper, it is necessary to familiarize with three words.

1) Circadian rhythm., meaning things happening in 24 hours of times.

2) Ultradian rhythm, happening within less than 24 hours when it is more than 24 hours the word

3) infradian is used. The best example of circadian rhythm is day & night, light and darkness. For infradian rhythm in nature the seasonal changes and in the individual.

In women, it is the menstrual cycle. Now the medical world is aware of the fact that gravitational force of the Moon is responsible for the menstrual cycle in women. At this point, it is worth remembering the sloka by Varahamihira “kujentu hetu pratimasamartavam” In nature there is a biological clock as indicated above, so also in beings there is a biological clock. The stimulus for the functioning of the biological clock comes from the light of the Sun. The process is as follows: When light impulses fall on the retina the stimulus then goes via the retinohypothalamic tract to the suprachiasmatic nucleus which functions as a cirearian pace maker. The impulses are transmitted to the pineal gland where they are converted to hormonal signal. This variations are reflected in blood pressure, body temperature, various hormones of the body, especially cortisone. Blood and its constituent corpuscle hemoglobin, insulin level, cholestrole content etc. Medical world has done limited research in this field. If chemotherapy is given to cancer patients before 11 a.m. it helps for faster relief. In case of dialysis for kidney diseases, they have found that the patients’ dialysed before 11 a.m. live longer. The action of poison differ depending upon the time. Anaesthetic agents given at particular hours have different properties. This is true with surgical operation on patients. All these indicate the importance of ‘Muhurta’ in medical arena. Medical world has done limited research in this field. One of the most modern scientific theory is the theory of chaos, in which it is jokingly remarked that the fluttering of the butterfly can create a cyclone in Los angels, after a period of months or years. Here the butterfly’s flapping of wings become an omen. When the ‘Latur’ earthquake took place the calamity fell mainly on human beings much less on animal kingdom because they were to take signals from the warning of the omen of the nature.         Source : theglobaljournals
